THE BRIEF
Connor and myself have been talking about doing an Audio Visual collaboration for years. We finally linked up for his 40th birthday celebrations at our friends campsite, The Wild Retreat. The Wild Woods Stage is set back from the main campsite which is pitch black at night with no polluting ambient light. I wanted to do something different with the space and create a super immersive dance floor. After a site recce the first idea to project onto the trees above the stage was a non starter as the canopy was too thin to effectively reflect the light. I decided a hologause screen would be a great addition and created a rough plan.

THE EXECUTION
The first challenge was to find a screen that big, 10x6m that wasn’t going to bankrupt me! That didn’t exist, so with the help of my darling girlfriend we made one! Then came the challenge to try and safely rig such a huge screen 15M up in the canopy. After an entire afternoon trying, we realised we were never going to get 15-20M high without a cherry picker or a tree surgeon with all the climbing gear. The next day with fresh eyes and ideas we decided to go horizontally across the stage which was a compromise but would still be incredibly effective and boyo boy did it turn out good. The mixture of smoke, hologauze screen, the stage and trees behind it created a multi dimensional immersive visual that really brought the space to life. My favourite part was the spoken word parts of Connors own productions where I filmed him reciting the words and added filters to the footage. His face was literally 3D projection outward through the audience. Incredible!
